Abstract
Dokuma, tekstil dünyası içinde üretim yöntemlerinden sadece birini oluşturmakla birlikte, kendi içerisinde gösterdiği zenginlikle neredeyse sonsuz bir çeşitliliğe ulaşmıştır. Bu çeşitlilik akademisyen ve uzmanlar tarafından yüzyıllarca incelenmiş ve farklı dillerde bazen ortak, bazen de ayrışan teori ve tanımlarla ortaya konmuştur. Başka bir dilden yapılan çevirilerin terminolojideki bu karmaşayı biraz daha artırabildiği de düşünülmektedir. İyi bir dil bilgisi bazen tek başına yeterli olmamakta, dokuma hakkında teknik bilgi de gerektirmektedir. Diğer yandan, tarihi gelişimleri incelendiğinde özellikle bazı kumaş türlerinin araştırmacılar arasında farklı yorumlamalara maruz kaldığı, tek bir terim altında oldukça fazla tekniğin biriktirilmesi nedeniyle bu kavram karmaşasının arttığı ve derin araştırmalar gerektirdiği görülmektedir. Bu kumaş türlerinden biri olan damask/damas, terim olarak pek çok kişinin zihninde ortak bir görüntüye ulaşmakla birlikte, literatür incelemeleri ile elde edilen bilgiler “damask” ile ilgili kesin bir tanımlama yapmanın zorluğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Örneğin basit bir arama motorunda bu terim araştırıldığında çoğunlukla aynı kompozisyon düzenine sahip tekstil ürünlerine ulaşılmakta, hatta bu düzenlemeye duvar kâğıtlarında bile rastlanmaktadır. O halde damask terimi belli bir desen ve kompozisyonu mu ifade etmektedir, yoksa gerçekte dokuma tekniği ile mi açıklanmalıdır?
Bu ihtiyaç doğrultusunda ele alınan ve tarama modelinde yürütülen bu çalışmada, tarih boyunca en eski desenleme tekniklerinden biri olarak bilinen “damask” terimi irdelenmiş, damask kumaşların tarihi gelişimi, teknik ve desen özellikleri çeşitli kaynaklarda karşılaştırılarak incelenmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar, damask kumaşların tarihi tekstiller içinde önemli bir yere sahip olduğu ve dolayısıyla uluslararası literatürde büyük yer tuttuğunu göstermekle birlikte Türkçe literatürde sınırlı özellikleriyle ele alınmaktadır. Dolayısıyla bu makale, yürütülmesi planlanan, detaylı çalışmalar gerektiren, uzun soluklu araştırmalara temel oluşturma niteliği de taşımaktadır.
